Is there a size limit for the game I submit?
Yes. The maximum installation file size is 200 MB and must be in the .zip format.
Who owns the IP?
You retain ownership in your originally developed game in line with the licensing
terms for XNA Game Studio 3.1. But by submitting your entry into the contest,
you grant Microsoft and its designees the right to use, review, assess, test and
otherwise analyze your entry in connection with the contest.
The rules say that Microsoft may use my game in its PR and marketing. What does
this mean, exactly?
By entering a game in the contest, you give Microsoft and its designees
permission to feature your entry and any associated materials in its promotional
materials and campaigns for this Contest. We might show your game on our
websites, on TV, radio and/or in print.
If you ask us, it's a win-win. You help us promote Dream-Build-Play, and we give
you some nice exposure in the gaming community.
I created a game for Xbox LIVE Indie Games. Can I submit it to
Dream-Build-Play?
Sure! Games can be submitted to both the Dream-Build-Play Challenge and the
Community Games channel. Just make sure that your game meets the criteria of the
contest you're entering, be it the
Standard Dream-Build-Play Challenge,
Microsoft Old Spice Challenge or both.
Am I eligible to compete in Dream-Build-Play?
Yes, if you: Are at least 16 years old; Can create and submit your game in
English; Legally live within a qualifying region. For complete eligibility
details, read the rules. If you're employed in the game development field,
you're eligible as long as your submission was not developed as a part of your
job or for pay. See the official rules for details.
Can I use middleware to develop a game for the contest?
Yes, as long as you have the right to use the third-party product to enter the
Dream-Build-Play Challenge.
Microsoft Old Spice Challenge FAQ
Do I have to use the assets you supplied?
No. The assets provided represent the general look and feel of the new Old Spice advertising campaign (examples provided in the asset kit). You are welcome to use these assets as is, or you can build your own assets utilizing ours as inspiration. The best games will utilize the campaign look and feel.
Can I take inspiration from the assets and build my own?
Absolutely! Use all the skills and resources you have to develop a great game.
If a game is created using my own assets will it be considered for the $60,000 grand prize?
Only if the assets used are clearly inspired by the look and feel of the Old Spice advertising campaign and are able to clearly communicate the product benefits of freshness.
Will games that do not win the Branded Game category be eligible for inclusion in the Xbox Live Indie Games Channel (XBLIG)?
Yes - all games that are eligible to win the Best Branded Game grand prize can be part of the Indie Games Channel.
What could disqualify my game?
You should feature the Old Spice brand in a positive light and have fun. Please no obscene or offensive language, and no nudity - those would definitely disqualify your game. If your game violates any of the current guidelines for Peer Review, it is NOT right for this contest.
Will I still be able to sell the game I create?
Yes. Just like any other game within XBLIG, consumers will be able to have a free 8 minute trial of your game and be allowed to purchase your Old Spice game as well. There is no limit on how long you can sell your game.
Will I have to give Old Spice a cut of my XBLIG profits?
No. Old Spice will not request any profit sharing for your game. You will retain full Game/IP ownership.
Why are you allowing Xbox Live gamers to vote and determine the best branded game?
Sure, Old Spice could pick the winner, but no one knows great gaming like the gamers themselves. The more you impress the XBL community, the more votes you could get and the better your chance to win $60,000!
Anything else I should know?
Yes - Although you retain the Game/IP ownership, Old Spice reserves the right to promote the winning game in marketing communications.
